village verse

Bread

Granny Barker mixed dough and put it to rise
Gradually growing miraculously to twice the size
Divide it up and fill each tin
A red hot oven to bake it in
The home made bread that we used to eat
Rarely seen now except as a special treat
The first slice eaten nice and hot
A taste of heaven is what you got
Smothered in butter each loaf so nice
Tasting delicious to the very last slice
Ready watering mouth as you slip it in
Wiping butter drips from off your chin
There's a toast in the fire glowing nice and red
The best toast being made from three day bread
Slathered with butter mixed of course
With liberal slaps of bottled brown sauce
Simple tastes from those days
Simple lives and simple ways
Time quickly changed time moved on
A blink of the eye and many things gone
Life now so much easier but is it as nice
Has progress extracted too great a price
