 Destiny's Child

Sleeping on a woven banana leaf mat with his siblings;
Living in a hut in the highlands with his grandmother.
This young Kenyan boy, so full of potential and dreams;
Awaiting  that day when he would get sponsor, believing.

I was watching Tony Compallo on TV one Sunday morning,
As he was pleading for Compassion International's children.
My heart was turned to jello, I called the hotline at that moment;
I would receive my sponsorship package very soon in the mail.

For eight years, Sherrie and I sponsored Mark as he became a man;
Education, church, community, love; all integrated in his soul.
Until he turned eighteen we watched him grow, then he was an alumni;
As the program set him on his feet, prepared him, and then released him.

Many years passed, at times wondering what happened to Mark;
Until three years ago, he contacted us; truly, he is a man of God.
A social worker in Kenya now, married, and with a beautiful family;
Twice having the honor of meeting destiny's child here in America.

Leading the Jirani Project in Kenya, Mark Okello is a hero to me;
A man of grace, of gentleness,  and most importantly, of gratitude.
Love fills his every fiber; love for the kids, his family, his nation, his God;
I'm thankful for being a small part of this man's life, he is destiny's child.
