 Where is the Harness?

Don't do this; no, don't do that;
Tantalizing, becoming overwhelming.
Attempted harnessing of my passions,
In order to become acceptable in society.
Becoming stronger, spitting out the bit;
Knowing within righteousness, yet in rebellion.
Taking a step, maybe on a good day, two;
Before stumbling into the seething fire.
I shout into the heavens for an answer;
I listen to the empty echo of my own voice.
Why the silence, why the stillness?
Where is the harness to tame the beast?

I read the sign, “Keep off the grass”;
Tempted, I place my big toe in the lush greenery.
Feeling so delightful, so refreshing, so alluring;
I begin to walk, then I drop and roll in the grass.
Overtaken by my desire once again;
Then comes the guilt, the sadness, the pain.
I place the bit of the harness back in my mouth;
I will obey the rules, the laws, the regulations.
Lasting until I step back on the sidewalk;
The breeze blows the blades of grass beckoning me.
Cursed with sensual perception, thirsting for another drink;
Where is the harness to tame the beast?
