Poetry that thinks out loud

MAN DOWN

As the bullet entered his flesh, he knew,
He knew this was his final stand.
As he fell his surroundings fell silent, too,
Until hitting the cold and wet sand.

Gritting his teeth the pain was immense
And he knew that no one would come.
As he lay in the sand he felt the sense
That this was a death to succumb.

His vision unclear as he looked to the right
And saw many more soldiers around.
Falling like flies a sorrowful sight
As more bodies then covered the ground.

He watched as the sand began to turn red
As many more lives became lost.
Many emotions ran through his head
As he realized what freedom had cost.
