Cochem

Overlooked by its castle
Standing on the high ground
Keeping a peaceful eye
On that little Mosel town,
Whose two halves
Lie on opposing sides
Of the Mosel River,
Split by a giant's stride.

And the little Ice Cream Cafe,
Where the selection is so good,
Can be feet under water
When that River is in flood.
But the little town of Cochem
With its narrow shopping streets
And its little cafe bars
Where neighbours often meet,

Is so human in size,
Moving at its leisurely pace,
And to this village born man
Is perhaps my perfect place.
There I can watch the river
As I drink my glass of Pils
And for a while forget
The world and all its ills.
