Grandpa's Example

I remember my dear Grandpa
how he sang a merry song,
he was custodian at our church
and sometimes we came along.

Many times we woke up early
and we'd walk through the halls,
Grandma would come with us
and wipe down the walls.

Grandpa whistled a happy hymn
and it brought about good feeling,
he cleaned and fixed everything
even got the cobwebs off the ceiling.

He never got paid for all the work
and the time that he spent there,
it was a service to the Lord
to clean the building with such care.

Through Grandpa I learned a lot
and his example did shine through,
it's better to be of service to others
than to get paid for what you do.

I am thankful for good memories
of one who taught me how to be,
now that he has passed away
his warm example lives in me.
