ON LOVE IN AUTUMN
(This is less a poem than it is a commentary prose on the experience of falling in love later in life...)
When two people meet and fall in love
in the autumn of their lives,
they must often face compromise
and open-minded understanding…

Learning to accept one another's histories
is a challenge that must be met,
but is well worth every effort and
the growth between two lovers
can become immeasurable.
To discover with each other how to become
trusting and mature in a way that both
feel unthreatened by what has come before
is an unbelievably bonding experience –
to look at our own past can sometimes
be daunting and embarrassing…
to look our partner's past
squarely in the eyes and
still love them without
conditions and without
restraint is moving,
and profound.
The unbounded joy and excitement
of beginning life anew with one who
knows you through and through,
who faces beside you
every bump along life's road
is to be young again; yet, the depth of love
that builds is fathoms beyond that which
can ever be realized in youth…
There is no greater love
than one discovered in
the autumn of one's life…
a precious and colorful vista
that unfolds before your eyes and
gives the heart hope that the winter
to come will be warm and filled with joy!
