A Cage To Hold My Dreams

A Cage To Hold My Dreams

Leave me something of yourself
A memory to last long after the mist
has swallowed up today,
Unsullied
Imperishable.
And I will hold it gently between my fingers.

Carve me vistas of perfect blueness
From a dying, charcoal sky.
I am a child half-eaten by cannibals
and you, my rescuer, my Boadicea in battle,
will give me new life.
One kiss from you and I become unstable,
like gunpowder.

Someday,
when you have tired of me and gone,
like the last train at midnight,
if I am asked my favourite memory,
I shall think of you
and warm my hands in secret.

Leave me something of yourself
something which is mine alone, mine exclusively.
Something you haven't shared with anyone
and never shall.
A cage to hold my dreams.
And I will store in it everything which was
ever good in my life.

Give me a tiny piece of that self which you
keep hidden behind a rehearsed smile
All I want from you is truth.
If you like the sound of my name, show it.
And in return.
I shall clothe you in tenderness.
I shall cook your eggs the way you like them,
I shall put warm shoes on your feet.
