A Letter From Iwo JimaMy Darling Lucy, Your sweetly penned words are moving and eloquent, flowing beautifully across the pages of my heart. Those poignant thoughts bring back wonderful memories of when we were happily together upon the white sandy shores of the beach and all was well with the world. But as I lie here in the burning sands of Iwo Jima facing the heavy machine gun fire of the enemy I cannot help but wonder if I shall ever see your lovely face again, or hear your lilting voice sweetly calling out to me. Don't be afraid for me my love because I shall die a soldier's death and stand tall in defense of my country. The bombs are bursting overhead like the fireworks on the Fourth of July and the enemy is close so we must trudge on and win this fight. I shall carry you in my heart my precious, and clutch your letter to my chest as I fight on.I shall dream of you in eternal sleep if I should fall on this terrible day.Good by my beloved.
