DAYS OF INDIAN SUMMER  

I love these Indian summer days
The short days and the long frigid night where
heavy blankets and quilts are needed to keep warm

The days are warm-short sleeve days
The sun cast long shadows across the lawn
tipping the tree tops with brilliant yellow colors

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

An early frost bring the sweet taste of
ripe persimmons and the luscious muscadine grapes

Walking across the lawn you hear the
crunch of fallen leaves and ripe pecans under your feet

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A red squirrel sitting in the shade is munching an acorn
Planning where he can bury other nuts for cold winter mornings

In the distance the sound of laughing children playing ball
their voices riding the soft breeze across the sky

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

These are the days of Indian summer
Folklore says that is the time that all the homesick Indians
from the past - meet again

They dance in the sunlight
and march and play for awhile
Then leave to come back again next year

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If that is so I can see why they would want to return
to such beauty as this
