Cliff Poems

Respects for Emperor Meiji

I lay down my sword
and pick up a cup of water,
sit on the grass, and
say a prayer of courage to the Lord.

Oh my Divine Self,
help me to reject all that is wrong.
Stop this enmity and violence
which threatens from entering my soul.
We are holy and large,
capable of reentering the world
as a channel of peace and good
but only if we stare this reality which blinds
in its black eyes and deny loudly its evil three times.

Once bang angry the drum
and let its clanging noise dissipate in the air
to calm silence I can feel.

Twice sweat beads of toxic impurities
down strands of my face into a pool
of disconnected time and space-
I have bathed much in memories
and will emerge a clean dry slate.

And three, in a bid of eternity,
let me breathe deep and clap finally,
leave my body on a smoky altar for a shadow to claim,
and join the Word in a fit of pure essence
  I can infinitely live with.

One two three
This is my exit, this is my song.
A temple wind blows and it is moved along.
I am still here, free and tree strong.
