Etwas Gedanken

Battlestar Galactica

He never really enjoyed roller coaster rides
They always had twisted and churned his insides
But he had been bullied and chided on this fateful day
Only option left had been to see it through, all the way

They took off at a misleadingly slow pace
Soon strong winds were buffeting his face
To make matters worse he was in the front row
Giddiness took hold as he leaned to look over the bow
The ground below was falling away from his view
He shut his eyes; what was to follow, he already knew
The ride slowed down as they reached the top
He was in the throes of panic at this split moment stop
He wondered what would happen if some component fails
And the next instant the car was plunging down the rails
The force pushed the flesh of his cheeks all the way back
Even his white lips pressed together gradually went slack
There were groans, shrieks and delighted whoops all around
After completing a 360, the car hurtled straight to the ground
He imagined ahead would be countless loops on the track
He was nearing the corkscrew rolls and possibly a heart attack

After 7 agonizing minutes, it came to a halt with a jar
He loosened his death grip on the front handle bar
Only then did he finally relax and open his eyes
He heard the terrified screams and some jubilant cries
He scrambled to get out of the death seat
Even though he felt quite shaky on his feet
He noted that his hands were clammy and cold
And his heart rate had increased many fold

As he made his way out, he noted this was not all
He saw the image of the ride on the digital screen on the wall
But all said and done, he had shown courage and grace
And a sheepish grin did slowly spread on his face
He re-grouped with his cheering friends on the way
Together all planning what to do the rest of the day

[This poem is a humourous take on a young man with fear of roller coasters. The roller coaster featured in this composition is the Battlestar Galactica (after the hit television show) at the Resorts World, Singapore, the world's tallest pair of 90kmph dueling roller coasters, featuring a zero-gravity roll, a cobra roll, corkscrews, vertical loops and near collisions just small distances apart.]
