Thankfulness is a ChoiceThankfulness is an attitude from the heart That is the only place where it really starts More than another celebration once a year Gathering with friends and family so dear Not based on emotional feelings my friend But counting all your blessings without end Most importantly for His greatest gift of love In sending Jesus to us from the Father above Many people are homeless, lonely, and poor Shelters get full and are unable to hold more They can become bitter and give up all hope Or thank God for providing ability to cope Others live on welfare with families to feed Disabilities cause hardships and added needs They can complain in the midst of desperation Or trust God to be the source of their provision Holidays are especially hard in times of grief Waves of depression creep in with no relief Many shut others out because of the deep pain Or seek God in prayer for His comfort to gain God never said that our life would be carefree But He promised to always be with you and me As we learn to trust Him more in every situation Then His peace will fill us with inner satisfaction We all have a choice in the ways that we respond When times of deep trials and suffering prolong Remember Jesus experienced all that we endure He is our only source of unending hope for sure Thankfulness is a choice because of free will But it is wise to search our inner motives still We may be angry at God if He seems to be unfair Or instead be thankful He knows best and cares If we have misconceptions of God from the start How can we know the benefits of a grateful heart Gratitude draws us closer to God through praise It is a sure path to peace and obeying His ways Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Hebrews 4:15-16 (NIV) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Psalm 107:1 (NIV) Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. Psalm 100:4 (NIV) Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Colossians 3:17 (NIV) And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. © Carol Salter 11/24/10 Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem
