The Decline
There was a time in the Caribbean all efforts were made
To make sure that at all time cricket was the game played
Be it the beach, the road or in any open plain
One could be quite sure that cricket was the game.
Even at those little breaks at primary or secondary school
The guys will fine time to play, this seemed to be a rule
Perhaps it seemed like a form of addiction or an attraction
But rest assured, the game dominated the entire islands
Those moments when there were those break for vacation
Or those trips taken, at a selected spot at an excursion
Many there will not hesitate to use that occasion
To play what seemed to be the game of the nation.
In the workplace, in the household or even at the bar
This subject will be the dominate item on the agenda by far
There will be comments and some will seemingly lament
The performance of the West Indies team in this department.
It is amazing how this game has in many ways absolutely
Performed that unifying bond throughout the many territories
When they tried federation, this seemed to brought wider separation
But cricket was the only think that brought that unified ground.
Now time as always bring many opportunities and changes to the fore
And the youngster are exposed to many other games via the mass media
Seeing basket ball, tennis, soccer track and field among the sports
They are also privy to the times, salaries and the hours of work
Seeing these packages and all the other probable fringe benefits
Why then should they spend those long hours playing cricket
Capping it all seeing the great performance at the Olympics
By athletes of the Caribbean giving those heroic performances.
Also the present state of t some past and current teams
Whose performances now are like a nightmarish dream
It has now be rated lower and this is quite right
As many of their deeds certainly will classify them as a neophyte
