chalk and cheese

opposites attract the story says
and it may be true for who knows
the effect of a night in town when
hopes are high and inhibitions go

we were rivals from the start eyeing
each other with suspicious eyes
in that fierce competition where
promotion was the dangled prize
she disliked my appearance
for me her laughter jarred
as we went for each other
with no holds barred

and then the office party
when many things were said
so how on earth did it happen
waking up with her in bed
with memories flooding back
of one memorable night
when just for a while
we'd suspended the fight

 she had screamed her pleasure
and I had moaned with joy
each competing yet cooperating
suspending the urge to destroy
and she had loosened her hair
sending it cascading long and loose
and we had spent  that night
in a passionate unspoken truce

back at the office old enmities started
and if possible we never ever spoke
but sometimes we'd cross glances
and grin as if at a very private joke
