Musings by The Poet Loriet

Fairy Tale Fallacy

"...And the handsome prince
took her away on his white horse
and made her into his special princess.
She wore beautiful gowns, had all
her heart desired, and they lived
happily ever after..."

We raise our kids on fairy tales,
lead them to believe in
pixie dust escapism,
and then send them out
ill-equipped to deal
with the real world.

Think about it.

The first time
they throw a temper tantrum,
kicking and screaming
in the middle of
a grocery store aisle,
"That's not fair!,"
we smile cynically, say,
"Life's NOT fair...
Get used to it!"

We feed their imagination
with magical solutions
and then wonder why
they can't deal with
disappointment.

I've spent my whole life
wishing I was still naiive enough
to believe in fairy tales,
and trying to remember that I did,
once upon a time.
