 When It Happens  (A Tale of Destiny)

Anticipation of the unspeakable, rocky trails ahead;
The elevation climbs ever higher into thin air.
Riches unthinkable await the owner of the key;
It dangles from my neck, under my plaid shirt.
There are many who will strip me;
Others who desire to destroy my dream.
The trail is overgrown, briers and thistles entwine;
My progress to the summit is slow.
Three steps forward, a stumble back a step or two;
Yet my dream keeps me walking on to meet my destiny.
Fighting against the elements, the wild beasts, the bandits;
Victory is anything but sure… bloodied, I press on.
The trail has now disappeared, thick undergrowth obstructs;
Slashing my way into the sun, machete ripping a path.
The heat of the day is replaced by the chill of the darkness;
I cannot sleep, too dangerous, I must continue on.
A sheer cliff blocks my way come sunrise, I stagger sleepily;
Seeking a pass, a route around this imposing rock.
A small crevice allows my a foothold, as I climb up 20 feet
Onto a plateau, the sun blistering down on my flesh.
I see the crystal city, the home of my destiny.
My key around my neck sings quietly like a tuning fork;
I stare in wonderment at this dreamland.
Peering across the deep chasm separating me from this city;
My attention now looks for passage to this world.
A huge dragon of red flies to the plateau, then lands…
His fiery eyes peer into my soul, his forked tongue flicks.
"The key" he hisses, "will grant you passage;
Show it too me mortal… show it to me or die."
My hearts races, seeking wisdom from the ancient ones
Living within the depths of the human soul.
The dragon snorts, the blast of heat melts my shield;
The wisdom within tells me he is of the evil ones.
I stand before the beast without fear, knowing he can
only kill the flesh. Speaking softly, I say "No, I will not."
Laughing, the beast inhales, then breathes the fire of death.
My body falls away, my soul flies freely over the chasm;
Key still dangling from around my neck. I enter my destiny.
Remember my tale when the trail of life gets tough,
And always be prepared for when it happens.
