 Mementos

On the walls memories in symbols;
Packed with powerful emotions.
Looking around the room tonight;
My eyes fall on mementos of life.

A picture that Dad had painted;
Remembering his peaceful soul,
His character, his gentle eyes;
Feeling his embrace once again.

I see my school wrestling letters;
Remembering the victories
As well as the loses that forged
The intensity of my soul.

A picture of Dad and my brothers
At his retirement from work.
The joy of that moment for him;
The future of years of relaxation.

A tennis racket I bought back in 1970;
For a class at Lynchburg College.
Remembering the wasted opportunity,
Looking at this Don Budge wooden model.

Pictures of Ted Williams, Babe Ruth,
Henry Aaron, and  Lou Gehrig.
The smell of rawhide on a green diamond;
Baseball, game of my childhood.

I fall into the pit of memories;
Some smiles, a lot of glassy eyed thoughts.
Life has been good in the long run;
Yes, life has been good.

Warmer, connected to my past, anchored;
I breathe in a relaxed breath.
Peace and tranquility comfort me
As mementos touch my soul tonight.
