"..without the Cross one gets nowhere. Let the crosses come, and may God's Holy will be done."
- Sta. Candida Maria de Jesus
She died on August 9, 1912. On her 99th Death Anniversary, I wrote this poem as a tribute.
Asking for rain and wind, the stones of Salamanca
endured the blazing heat of an August afternoon.
Shimmering tears soothed the wary silence
of prayers and meditations...candles
and flowers that scent the air...chants
of melancholy conquering the monotony
of dryness. Finally, the dusk had come...its shadow
basking over the still waters of Tormes
and the majestic facade of the cathedral.
The saintly beauty had rested. Her eyes
no longer shine and her warm smile
faded in the light of her peace.
But unwithered
was the faith that won her battles,
her hope that branched her every dream, and
her love that continue to blossom and bear fruits
of joy...
It was time for her to heed that call
of the One who gave her all these,
she answered, yes.

Benedict XVI: Six newest saints show faith can still be found
The pontiff said the six new saints offered for veneration sought to be such an inspiration.
Remembering each of the new saints, he paused particularly on Spain's St. Candida Maria de Jesus to answer that final question of the Gospel passage. Today, he explained, one can see "with relief and conviction" that there is faith on earth in the contemplation of figures such as her.
Known for her commitment to prayer, in 1871 St. Candida founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Jesus in Salamanca, Spain to teach children and assist women. The order continues to function in Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe.
