Where were you in the years when you were most needed?
Life was telling me to give up and I almost conceded.
I don't know how large an empty desert is, but yet,
I know how empty and thirsty a lonely man can get....

I know people that are embarrassed by my writing this way.
Keep such private things to yourself is all that they say.
But a singer can throw it out there as long as it's a song.
He can say whatever he pleases and he can do no wrong....

I think it's because people believe they are in it for money,
So it's okay for them to cry in their beer; life is so funny,
Because I place similar words in a poem from my heart,
It causes me and the singer to be held far apart....

I had no friends, or even enemies, no need for a phone.
My only need was for you to hurry up and come along.
I wonder if this would be more acceptable if I put it to song.....
