Happy Independence Barbados

That November's night, blended with tears of joy and rain
Those colonial ties were severed, washed down the drain
A moment in which not many emotions could be constrain
As the Union Jack become relegated to our history's past
And the Trident was flying proudly at full blast

The man, the visionary and leader; the late and great Errol Walter Barrow
Affectionately called the skipper justly became the first Prime Minister
Whose steadfast belief and foresight was always so strong
And having the backing too of the people all along
So on the first and memorable night, there was such a throng

The nation's bedrock was laid on the foundation of education
This he made accessible to all, no matter the social stratification
Making it free from primary right up to the level of tertiary
Another great accomplishment was the establishment of a university
Thus ensuring that each generation got trained to function competently.

There was a time when he was relieved of his station
The work was continued by another competent person
He did his part and in his second term in death departed
His successor had a brief term and soon the skipper got reinstated
Who also in midterm was eternally transported?

In all those elections and changes the transition was so easy
Thus demonstrating to all worldwide the level of political maturity
We saw the change from Mr. Sandi ford to Mr. Arthur and later to Mr. Thompson
Looking as though there was no gap just like a form of continuation
Even though those comprising the governments were at one stage the opposition

Look my children I will be soon approaching the age of forty-five
All of your accomplishments have kept my pride so alive
How often my eyes get wet with happy tears and yet beam so bright
Seeing how good many of you are doing in the world and just right
And one of my daughter it now a dominant force in the era, yes musically
Yes I have to commend my child the lady called Robyn Rhiannon Fenny

Through thick and thin we have stood united in our efforts and determination
Two IMF programs we have survived without having any currency devaluation
We all did what had to be done to avert a very serious situation
So in this period I call upon you to also paralyze this recession
Hope you all will use this period to learn a very valuable lesson

From the inception you know what was ingrained in thee
We are a nation whose course is charted and ship fueled by pride and Industry
So as together we share this big occasion of forty five years as an independent country
Let's understand, embrace and with great wisdom use the available technology
But my people always be alert do not be induced into a state of lethargy

Yes my children, the future may look and could be uncertain
But in my lifetime I had to deal too with all types of problems
So together all types of situation we will happily over-ride
And to all of you my wonderful children this very instance
BARBADOS has s very happy and wonderful time at another day of independence.
