''Folly''

Canaan-winter poems

"Canaan-winter poems"
K. Scott smith

1.)
Silently waited for January to arrive,
as it does, always cold,
always right on time.

See the fields grown to green,
and then green receding,
turned to waist lands of white.

Ice seeps into every crevice,
every stalk, every seed, every bone.

A sheer drop
from frost covered Mountaintop
as forgotten as the woman in the park.

2. )
See how they gather,
in great numbers, for all to see,
So fearless, so bold,
so careless, So naive.

3.)
When winter grows weary of its reign,
the young princes of summer will return from the East
and bring with them the boldest and brightest laurels of green.
And cover all with fiery splendor for a while...

4).
Make/Model
Modern troubles,
Outstanding,
Outrageous,
Ongoing.

Modern marvels
Crowded streets-
that empty lanes, making them bearable.
Luxury, anxiety,
''the new age''.
Just like the old days,
same circles walked in different ways.

5.)
When its over its over
However much it hurts.
however long it lingers after its gone.

Your disguises give you away-
I see you,
like a feather in a cap.

used to be sad,
now I'm not so sure.

6.)
What you seek,
buried in books,
in philosophy
at swords point and edge,
in stars
in films.

every point in the circle-
dissolving,
ceaselessly

Laughter swells up,
like a fit
as powerful as anger, as sorrow.
I can laugh at death!
I can mock life!
I may laugh at anything..
At myself.

7.)
A lady without grace-
not in her eyes, not in her legs, or her hips.
Not in the words she speaks,
Oh how those words would cling to me.

She will not abide,
nor relent
She will not relinquish,
She must be burned at the stake-
again and again and again
Scatter her and let ME rest in peace!

8.)
One vital point
and it tumbles down
A kingdom crushed
as easily as an arm.

We misplace our honesty,
we misplace our trust.

What is ''truth''?
A lovers lie in the night?
A gentle sigh?
Can set you free
can destroy you.

Use caution.

9.)
Poised on the very edge-
of greatness,
of discovery,
of self destruction.

The breaking of traditions,
of habits, of addictions,
Replaces old patterns
with newer ones.

wide awake-
still half dreaming-
half sleeping.

10.)
Monarchs and tyrants-
Those destined to rule,
and those who's capacity allows them to only follow.

Rebels and spies
the mustering of secret powers,
the differences and the similarities

Ten thousand years we record history
volume upon volume of comparisons, analysis.
But men find what the set out to find and little more.
Many gifts have been mistakes,
Much virtue  hath risen from folly.

11.)
Appetites restrained,
fast.
then plunging-
indulging every joy, sorrow,
every wine, every vessel of flesh.
A hearts call to arms.

Write what you can-
while you can.
Die with honor.

12.)
Momentum gained,
in small, almost undetectable, movements.
Then in grand leaps-
so much endured
just for endurance's sake.

Life moves
so must I
changing as often as circumstance,
Giving, taking , leaving.

13.)
Contempt!
He smokes a hundred cigarettes,
No need for reasons or excuses
nor the subtle difference between them.

Staying up all hours
remaining cool in the shrewd midday Sun.
Counts blessing and curses,
pocket change, women and cars.

Rusty blade in silver sheath
clean and sleeping on dirty, bloody sheets
writes and drinks  rum or his hot tea.
His mind wanders in all directions,
always so far from where he really is.

14.)
You were gone
as the cold winds began to blow
forward, on!

Some other place...

and the waters cease to flow,
when the time you take
begin to take its hold.
