 I Try
I try to grasp the ocean in my hands;
But it escapes through my fingers, returning to the sea.
I try to possess a piece of land and a nice home;
But storms sweep away any illusions of stability.
I try to store up riches for my family‘s future;
The shifting sands teach me this is complete folly.
I try to control my children, to direct their lives;
But they rebel and run in another direction.
I try to embrace my wife in order to hold on;
Smothering out the warmth of our flame of love.
I try to protect myself from any and all harm;
Becoming imprisoned deep within my protective cell.
I try to live my life with me in complete control;
I hear the laughter of destiny; for I am nothing.
I try to place my God in my understandable box;
Yet He can never be limited by my theology.
I try to possess all that I need to become free;
Yet freedom comes from letting go of all that I have.
