What is the poet on about?

What is poetic verse, forget all that puritanic rumbling,
A personal view of art from prose to linguistic bumbling,
Whether it tickles your merry soul or create an understanding,
Most poets will aim to convey that picture so commanding

A description of a scenic canvas or a dog chasing its' tail,
With words that capture the moment, that vision to unveil,
Evocative if you're the reader, a catharsis directed at you,
Different meanings for all recipients including the poet too,

Surviving down through the ages from Homer to this day,
Contemporary poets had influence, as do authors of a play,
Robbie Burns or John Milton, surely the greatest of their time,
William Shakespeare or T S Eliot, true geniuses in their rhyme,

An internet attracts hidden talents, their descriptions of the word
From different cultures they venture forth, their muses to be read,
They often critique each other, who's to say if your gifted or not,
The object is a literal canvas, with a medium that can't be bought

So be your own person, allow the world a journey into your head,
Fear not what they criticise, acknowledge the subjective art instead,
A Poet is his own poet, someone will understand your inner view,
Script thoughts down on paper, appreciate a creativity that's in you,

Language can be beautiful,
Language can be so strong,
Language can change the world,
Is a universal language wrong?
