Visions

By the Waters of Babylon

By the waters of Babylon
we sat down and wept.
How shall we sing
the Lord's song in a strange land?'
These words have echoed
across the ages
striking a chord
in the souls of the refugees,
the uprooted,
having left their homes behind,
now only
smoking holes in the ground,
journeying to a strange land,
still dreaming of a world
that once was
and never will be again.
Yet hoping against hope
that the Lord in His wisdom,
in His providence
can give beauty for ashes
make the bitter waters sweet
replace mourning with the oil of joy.
