Battlefields of long ago
Where bayonets also took toll
Of life and limb and other things
Left on the front on barb wiring
Mortar shells propelled in air
Reaching targets in great despair
Leaving carnage about the field
Not field of dreams but some reprieved
The moments silence had its share
Of breath and smoke on landscape bared
Here where wars are fought and left behind
But not of heart and unsound minds
The road back home is long and hard
For young and old whose lives are marred
Forever more the walking scarred
Scarred bodies and minds alike
The flashbacks of the fire fights
The screams of pain for medic heard
The morphine sticks to numb reserved
Here where wars were fought and are
No less striking but near not far
Are those who made it through front lines
Are less welcomed and last on lines
As of late there has been much said of our war veterans
But most of it swept under the flag they served.
