Visions

For My Mother

Thank you, Lord,
for my mother.
who made me go to church,
who saw to it
I received spankings I needed.
They did not a dribble
of physical harm.
They were persuasive,
communicative
and thought provoking.
She taught me discipline,
that I was responsible
for my actions.
She taught me
respect for learning,
a love of good books,
and introduced me to
the study of Philosophy.
She was of one accord
with my father
so I could not
play one off
against the other.
Who says raising a child
is not a job?
I thank you, Lord,
for all my mother did for me!
