Aida, The Ageless Longing of the Human Soul

So full
of the longing
of the human soul,
reaching upward
to the Divine,
poorly understood
but deeply desired,
longing
for some fulfillment
beyond this life,
beyond fleshly
satisfaction,
the tragedy of
merely human love
missing out on
the Divine,
the eternal,
the ultimate,
the love of God
which surpasses
human understanding!
How great is God
and greatly
to be praised!

I have always liked this opera from the first
time I heard it, nearly 60 years ago.
A great love story of the love of
Radames, an Egyptian general for
Aida, daughter of a king,
an arch enemy of the Egyptians.
It does a great job of giving
a sense of another time,
another country, another culture.
I especially like the triumphal march
when Radames returns with the spoils
of the enemy and hundreds of slaves.
The music for this and the aria "Celeste Aida
is utterly transporting!
Underlying the plot and action of the story
is the deep longing of the human heart
for what this world cannot offer:
peace of soul and immortality.
The music speaks wonderfully of this
far more than words and
the tragic ending can convey!
