Irene's Treasure - Echoes of My Heart

The Wave Dancer's Last Voyage

The cruise ship made her voyage down
To a paradise of fun they had found

The country's shores of old Belize
Welcomes tourists to her "Cayes"

A dreaded Hurricane brewed around
Rain fell quite hard upon the ground

Though it sailed the seas with ease
The old ship rocked with heavy breeze

The weather's warning had began
O'er radio's news throughout the land

The captain's choice was not to move
Though all his crew did not approve

To stay inside his strong refuge
To ride out the storm's wild deluge

A fancy feast was then prepared
With wine and dancing to be shared

The staff was ordered to their posts
They disagreed to that of course

But they knew of the captain's wrath
If they didn't keep his ordered path

At that time the storm grew worse
On her wild, destructive course

All did not have life jackets near
The Captain turned a cold deaf ear

Staff feared they'd drown on the trip
And wanted to leave the doomed ship

They kept thoughts of loved ones near
Some cried and trembled in utter fear

Brave crewmen with guns in hand
Joined together in a brave stand

They ran away that dreadful night
Fleeing into bushes out of sight

With nought but clothes upon their backs
These are the awful but true facts

Some froze like statues in their tracks
A lady left the ship, she never turned back

And... As the music played too loud

While the wine's chilled fire flowed
The ship was tossed upon the rocks

To sink beneath the sea's abode
At the spot a shrine was built
So this sad tale in history goes

On darken nights, as winds blow cold
The ghost ship sails, so we are told

Belize releases its final report....
From the April, 2005 issue of Undercurrent.
The tragic loss of twenty lives on October 8,2001,
when Peter Hughes' Wave Dancer capsized while moored
in Big Creek, Belize, during Hurricane Iris, will long
be remembered by divers. Both the Wave Dancer and the
Belize Aggressor sought shelter from the hurricane by
motoring a mile upstream to the Port of Big Creek,
about 75 miles south of Belize City. During the night,
the full force of Hurricane Iris' 150-mph winds struck
the port. The Wave Dancer broke away from its moorings,
colliding with the Aggressor before capsizing. Seventeen
divers from the Richmond, Virginia, dive club and three
crew members died, while three guests and five crew members
                        survived.
