Visions

The Old Schoolhouse

Deserted now
with weathered walls
of brick and stone,
it sits on a rise of ground
amidst silent somber gloom.
The old schoolhouse
amidst the empty playground,
unoccupied, decaying
wooden benches.
A scene once so full of life,
where a hundred children
could be seen to play
with lots of noisy fun,
cheers for a home run,
with swings,
a primitive merry-go-round,
propelled around and around
only by kid power.
A scene once so full of life!
Within, long, silent,
voiceless halls
with dirt and dust
and cobwebs everywhere
in decaying classrooms
where children learned the alphabet,
reading, writing and arithmetic.
A scene once so full of life!
