Happy Birthday To My Sister

Your fingers used to curl around
Just a single one of mine.
You would follow in my footsteps…
I could not leave you behind!

You trailed me through the barnyard
As I performed my daily chores…
And knelt faithfully beside me
As I scrubbed those farmhouse floors.

And since I was your only guest
For that after dinner tea,
I could choose the entertainment
And, of course, I chose ET.

You learned the words to all his songs…
We sang through the afternoon…
Until mama claimed our guitar
Which was, of course, her broom.

We played jacks and pick up sticks
Sprawled on that wooden floor.
Of course, you always won each game,
Because you were keeping score.

You were the cutest little kid…
Blue eyes and golden hair.
And you so loved your big sister…
Guess I was real blessed there.

Though time and distance parted us
Because life works that way…
It’s brought us back together
And together we will stay!

You’re much more than a sister…
You’re a buddy and a friend.
The trail we’ve blazed together
Is a trail that will not end.

These rhyming words are all I have
But I’m hoping they’ll portray
All the love that’s in my heart
Today on your birthday.
