He Wasn't Guilty

Beaufort, NC is the site of this piece.
It was during the  Civil War there was a soldier accused of a crime.
In the courthouse square is a big old oak tree.
It was there on this tree they at one time hung offenders of the law.
Well, there was this one soldier who was accused of an offense.
He was shackled and brought before the town' s people.
There he was hung; on this old oak tree.
Today on this anniversary of this happening you can go at midnight and knock on the tree and ask if the soldier was guilty.
The tree in audible voice will declare the soldier was not guilty of the offense.
This has happened more times than I can count but it is all true.
Do your research and find I am telling the truth.
This happened sometime close to Halloween so many years ago.
