December 7, 1941 - a date which will live on in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Address to Congress, Dec. 8, 1941
32nd president of US (1882 - 1945)

Pearl Harbor…The Memory

I have heard all the stories
From my first husband, Jake.
He survived two sunken ships…
His dreams kept me awake.

He’d hit the walls until I’d find
 Some other place to sleep.
Pearl Harbor really scarred him.
His mental wounds ran deep.

I once teased and called him crazy.
He agreed that it was true.
“Three wars, two sunken ships,
And thirty years with you.

How could I possibly be sane?”
He teased me in return.
But the guy was a real hero!
He didn’t let his shipmates burn!

He pulled kids out of blazing ships!
He saved so many lives.
Because of his courageous acts
Surely someone still survives!

Pearl Harbor lives in infamy!
I’m not likely to forget.
And Jake and the US Navy
Are a big part of me yet.

~~Dedicated to my son Tommy~~
(Who is still so proud of his dad)

~~AUTHOR'S NOTE~~
I was married to two wonderful men...Jake and Ish were both war heroes...
Ish fought the Germans while Jake fought the Japanese. Since this is Pearl
Harbor Day, this poem is done to honor and remember Jake...we still have
all his medals...his courage and bravery will never be forgotten.
