Visions

Only a Single Rose

A rose I give you today,
a perishable flower, not here to stay,
like a song dying away,
like sunset at the close of day,
a symbol of love here to stay!
How much in my foolish way
these paradoxic things manage to say
what words simply cannot express
the love that I wish to confess!
Like the mists of morning,
like the shadow of a smile,
like an intimation dawning,
like looks which beguile,
some things are sensed
rather than seen,
intuition
not exposition,
so I hope you hear
what I cannot say
how much I love you, dear!
