Hunger

When unhappiness sinks in, when you can't do what you'd dearly love to do, for whatever reason,
and the hunger in your soul is mistaken for hunger for food... and sometimes food is the only
thing that can give you comfort. I am a person who struggled with weight issues my entire life.
It took a long time for me to understand what the hunger was really about...

HUNGER

I.

Hunger.
Ah, yes. Hunger.
The burning ignited within
that you try to quell
with food.

You eat and eat,
but the hunger
isn't satisfied.
You try to quiet it
with more food,
but still
it doesn't go away.

Sometimes
you think about it,
this hunger,
but what it says
scares you.
It reminds you
of dreams not fulfilled,
of projects not completed,
of ideas never brought to life.

A hunger
that at times
burns with such intensity
that it makes you cry,
makes you feel crazy
and you continue
to dampen the flame
with food
hoping you can sleep.

II.

Sometimes
The flame does diminish
(enough food
will weigh anything down)
and you wander days
like a zombie
hiding your feelings and desires
allowing the will of others
to dictate your actions.
You forget who you are,
forget you can fly.

With the smell of burnt ashes
in your soul,
you continue to eat,
but this time,
it is to dull the pain…

III.

The flame awakens.
Something ignites the spark.
Once again, you burn
from deep inside.
At first, it's refreshing
and you fan the flame
with plans and ideas.
You even accomplish something
and it feels so good.

Then one thing
gets in the way,
then another.
You have to put
your creativity on hold,
stop the flow of passion.

One more cycle complete,
you eat more and more
trying to appease a hunger
that will never
be  satisfied with food.
