 once upon a time

ILLUSION
HERE we are, beginning -nothing stands
in our way. We move confidently forwards.
After all we are young, life stretches onwards
no hiccups in sight, youth is on our side.
It will remain so; we are not like those old people.

25 years old, never, we are and shall always be young.
Can’t imagine what it must be like to be really old:- ‘25’
Now that’s a number on a door, but then again, what
If it’s an illusion, this period of youth, of never growing old
We’re 16 now, grammar school, what happened to primary
Schools, how come we left them behind, are we growing older.
Na we have youth on our side, we’ll never grow old.

Ah what happened, I’m sixty now, grown old, the illusion
Of youth ground down by life’s experiences, yesterday
I was sixteen, what happened, youth that most precious
Illusion smashed, glanced in a mirror this morning old guy
Peering back at me wide eyed, who is he, can’t be me I’m sixteen.
