EAST OF BAKERSFIELD

EAST OF BAKERSFIELD

It's the kind of heat
That knocks you off your feet
Out here in the Mojave
Where the Joshua tree grows
Deformed by the same
Sun and wind
That we slip through
So comfortably
At sixty degrees
Just a quarter inch away
From a hundred and fifteen
In the shade
And thinking nothing of it.
