Once,
in a plot of earth
split and cleared
of every leave
by angry
ax handle men,
a bulimic caterpillar,
as skinny as a bed post
pulled mud puddles
over her shoes
as if they were nothing,
as if
she was looking
for a nest
of hungry ants
to complete
her muddy feat,
her suicide,
her metamorphosis.
