HIS ONLY FRIEND

Life wasn't't worth the time of day, for he had grown so tired
The knocks, belittlement and physical abuse had taken its toll
He just reached his eleventh birthday in a world upside down
His nights seemed endless and filled with screaming shadows

I emerged as his only friend, within a broken soul at age six
Many times it was my hand grasping his from the darkness
I would wrap my arms around him, a soul needing warmth
Shoulder to shoulder we would walk upon the great Red Road

They were the times when he'd come alive, filled with promise
We'd run toward that great ball of sunshine trying to catch it
Its warmth of light gave reason to singing a song of reference
It was I who shadowed his every move absorbing the souls pain

One night I heard him cry out in horror, echoing in the darkness
Throughout his ordeal put upon him, he cried out for my hand

His cries quickly turned to the blood curdling screams of terror
I reached out into the darkness searching for his trembling hand

Pulling with all my might to rescue him from his brutal attack
This time it felt different, he no longer fought to escape the dark
I'm begging him not to give up, I felt panic as his body went limp
I who was crying so hard the dark turned blood red blinding me

His hand still in mine, I now cradled the spirit of this boy child
"I will lighten your heart, I will be your friend till the end of time"
My words of comfort became the song of purpose for my friend
His world filled with mentally and physical abuse was no longer

Face to face holding each others hands we meld together as one
In complete silence, in complete stillness in the garden of serenity
Whispering softly like a summer breeze that's sweet in fragrance
Open your eyes my brother, my friend we journey towards the sun

He opened his eyes to a world he had only imagined in his dreams
Looking into my eyes, reached for my hand that was always there
I held the hand of my newly reborn-ed friend in the light of the sun
We both took a breath as we faced the great Red Road before us

My friend looked at me through his tear glazed eyes raised my hand
Placing a kiss upon his own soul, whispering,"Thanks My Friend."
Together we started our journey anew through serenity's garden
He would never know darkness or abuse again, his spirit is light

It was one day after his eleventh birthday that his mortal life ended
Never able to overcome the brutal life his was suffering day after day
At his young age he slit his wrists after the brutal beating by his father
A demonic presents that chained a young soul to darkness of the mind.
