He had been away upon another long term contract
That needed him to be there on the job always..
As there they hired so many locals in the area
And it took a lot to see they all worked longest days..
Always keeping in touch with his loving wife at home
And making sure the extra money was there as well..
Her telling him that all was going ever so fine
And that the children they too were doing just so well..
The longest time it seemed to drag the longest line
He was too far away to just drop things and go home..
But when he at times rang a few old friends back there
They were not the same to talk to as usual on the phone..
His children when he asked to talk to them as well
Were always somewhere with friends on the day..
But he carried on though the days and nights were long
And at all times he sent home his hardest well earned pay..
Came the time there was a strike on the whole job
And he took the opportunity to catch a plane and go home..
He had never told her he was coming back at all
Thought it would be such a surprise for all back there alone..
He walked up his same old path through the front garden
And the lawn was uncut and the beautiful flowers all dead..
The rubbish bin there was totally over full not emptied
And heading for the front door his heart felt like lead..
The front door was ajar the lock as if broken some
Walking in his home looked more like the front yard at best..
Things were laying simply all over the place everywhere
Not any longer the most beautiful neatest place of rest..
There were empty bottles about of the strongest booze
And signs of the children nowhere at all within sight..
His loving wife she was nowhere to be seen at all
And out in the backyard was something else of fright..
It had been two years his working away all of the time
A person next door seen him arrive and slowly came in to tell..
Seemed his wife had been doing drugs and working as if nights
And the welfare had long taken his children away as well..
It had not been long after he had left and a few old mates
Had come around to see how she was coping to lend a hand..
And it was soon after they and other were often always there
And late night parties became as if something of demand..
He was told his wife eventually was hardly ever there at all
Only of a day at times but very seldom ever was she seen..
All of this time away he'd rang her on her mobile phone
And as she had told him always all was fine and ever so supreme..
