How long to write a poem?
As long as it takes to progress
from one's earliest memories to adulthood,
to discover the beauty of flowers,
to hear the bird's happy songs
when you are not happy yourself,
to wonder if these simple creatures
are not in their own way wiser than we,
to see a carefree, laughing girl grow
into a responsible adult and one day,
a wise old woman, beautiful in maturity,
to see a man in a far away, lonely place
bury his sweetheart under a cairn if stones
and his heart along with her,
to see a heartbroken mother
claim the body of her only son
a glorious hero in a war
she did not understand
only that this was her baby
her hope in all the world,
to see that all that glitters is not gold,
things are not always what they seem,
to seek for knowledge and wisdom
in this foolish world,
to sail beyond the sunset to lands afar,
to know the human passions
of love jealousy and hate,
to savor words and meanings,
their conjuring tricks as
some savor fine foods,
Your lifetime, heart and mind and soul,
whatever you can taste, touch and feel,
that's how long!
