Visions

Old Books

What can we learn
from an old book?
That truth is always true,
that the tragic secrets
of the human heart
have not changed,
loneliness, sorrow
and broken dreams,
that fools take no delight
in understanding but
only in their opinions,
that they learn nothing
from history and must
endlessly repeat it,
that there is a great heritage
of the best human wisdom
of the past treasured up
to a life beyond life,
that in all our getting
we should get understanding,
that the fear of the Lord
is the beginning of wisdom,
That the grass withers,
the flowers fade
but the Word
of our god
will stand forever!
