Perilous Past

We were chased by some strangers who wanted a fight
And sensing the danger, we quickly took flight.
For there was no doubt that they meant to do harm
So we ran like the wind and with greatest alarm.

Away from the hazard that threatened us so
While dodging the rocks they had started to throw.
Which caused me to wonder though I just couldn't see
That because I was white, they would have to hate me.

But now that I'm older, I sometimes look back
And admit that I scorned them because they were black.
Therefore, it is clear that we all were to blame
Which made of us players in an immoral game.

How I wish we could learn from our perilous past
And that we could reason and find peace at last.
But until we can move from the bias and hate
There can be little hope that the scourge will abate.
