Visions

Cromwell

God's man of war
who longed for peace,
country squire
who led
God's iron-willed
saints and martyrs,
out numbered three to one,
to sweep the field.
"If God is with us,
who can be against us?"
the roundheads' battle cry.
Soldier of the "Good old cause!",
statesman of The Protectorate,
his monument, alas,
no lasting commonwealth,
no spotless record,
but a contrite heart
who sought the Lord
in prayer and anquish
and trembled at God's Word!

The English Civil War ended
in seeming failure for the
Puritans but it was largely
vindicated by the Glorious
Revolution of 1688.

Kingship was retained but with
the understanding that the Divine
Right of Kings was a dead duck.
The power of the king was limited
and a workable Parliament
achieved, such as Cromwell had tried
to obtain, and a bill of rights
enacted.
