PERFECTION IN DEFLECTION  (Hard Armor Helps!)

On a blazing day, Texas hot,
  A young armadillo was shot
  By a sad immigrant Pole
  Down near a fishing hole.

  The hard-shelled young armadillo
  Was trudging toward Amarillo,
  Avoiding all busy highways
  By walking near rural by-ways.

Although a gun's fast bullet 'ping'
On his hard shell caused no sting,
  Deflected, losing very little force,
  That cartridge completed its course.

  Diverted from a straight line,
  Its velocity still just fine,
The bullet hit, not Texas dirt,
  Although a mother-in-law was hurt.

Now in a tough Texas court
The Pole is ordered to support
  His injured mother-in law,
  Newly marked with a flaw.

  But the small armored armadillo
  Still trudges toward Amarillo,
Its shell still in one piece--
  Will Texas wonders ever cease?
