we grew up walking
railroad tracks
convinced we could
stop the world, like a train if
we laid across it's path.
collectingrunaway coins
and pig-iron ballast, rail
spikes loosened and left
interesting in their rust,
kings walked with
less splendor, half drunk
sailors with less swagger,
we never stopped a train,
and knew we couldn't.
yet we would have tried
if told we shouldn't.
i see greater things
now to stop,
time, pain, children growing
beyond my roof.
theclouds rolling here
cannot be hindered
to preserve for us the sun,
and rain can only be
hidden from
and you
will leave.
it is grey today
and the streets are quiet
my desk battered
with unopened
and unsent letters,
as a train in the distance
fades westward to
california.
