Five years ago
You were nothing but a stranger
Just a boy who was forced to sit next to me do to our last names
Somone who I could've never cared for
In fact upon first introduction thoght nothing of
But then you smiled
I'd study your expressions every day after that
Not because I thought we're cute
Or even because I liked you
But because there was something about your smile
I never knew if it was real or not
There would be days where I'd belive it
Mesmerized by your eye's twinkle
Captivated by the idea of you being happy
Absorbed in your laughter
Drowning in the delusion that maybe I caused it
Then there were days when it felt empty
I'd ask if you were okay and you would smile
As if to convince me that you were fine
Even if something was eating at you
Causing you to feel a pain I could never imagine
One day you asked me why I always checked on you
I didn't respond and maybe it was because I was embraced
Or maybe it was because I didn't know how to say
'I really care about you even if you don't understand'
Instead I just shrugged and smiled
After 8th grade ended we didn't talk
You left in 9th without a trace
Somedays I'd look back at old pictures of you
The ones where you decided to smile
And for some reason my heart would hurt
I knew I missed your smile
Five years later
I finally got to meet you again
You've changed in a way that I could never explain
But at the same time deep down you've remained
Telling me again that I don't need to watch you
And that made me smile
I don't know where you went or where you're going
I don't really know how you actually feel
I still don't know if I trust your 'I'm fine'
But the thing is I don't need to
I, for some reason, still just care about you
Then the other day you said you were leaving
You'd only talk to a select few and in that moment I knew
I wasn't going to be one of the lucky ones
And for some reason my heart hurt again
Only this time a single tear fell
