Poetic-Verses
'' Then With Cheat They're Labelled ''
I had occasion to deal with an incoming homeless client some years ago who was being treated
as a drunk by a member of staff, it turned out he was a stroke victim.
I've made a gaffe,
I had a laugh,
At some poor guy's expense,
Now upon my epitaph,
They'll say I have no sense.
He couldn't talk,
A verbal lock,
I thought I heard him mutter,
So, I decided him I'd mock,
I'd make fun of his stutter.
Wwwwwhy he said,
I'm easily led,
I was only having a joke,
He replied you're off your tiny head,
You really make me boak.
He used a stick,
On that I'd pick,
So I called him limpy Dan,
He said you really make me sick,
Not fit to be called a man.
With just one arm,
I'd cause alarm,
I challenged him to fight,
He said I should be on a farm,
Cleaning up all night.
Blind in one eye,
I made him cry,
I enjoy this being cruel,
Compassion to him I would deny,
He told me I was a fool.
You're old and weak,
Demeanour that's weak,
A parasite all your life,
He told me he was quite unique,
But I still gave him strife.
When no-one smiled,
I felt defiled,
My mates upped and walked away,
It was then I felt really riled,
Why would they not stay.
Then I looked at him,
He stood tall and prim,
They told me I was talking dross,
Twas then I felt really grim,
He was wearing The Military Cross.
We should all feel shame,
Accept some blame,
For the way we treat the disabled,
Some are left without a name,
Then,
'' With Cheat They're Labelled '
Though this poem is fictional it's written as a reminder that, there but for the grace of whoever, go I.
Behind every genuinely differently abled person there is a tale to be told.
Never judge a book by its cover, it's what's within that needs to be measured.
