Sniper

There's a Taliban in my sights
And I'm feeling cold and strange
I'll just try to imagine
He's a target on the range.
I gently squeeze the trigger and
All time seems to slow and stop
And then my round hits and
I watch his body jerk and  flop.
I should have shouted a warning
So the lawyers will say
But he was placing a bomb
And he was too far away.
I'll  have to convince myself
Through the next sleepless night
That I had no alternative
That what I did was right.
Against all these feelings
There's a question I must ask
I wonder in the future
Will I be called to task
Will some desk bound REMF
Who's never been under fire
Call me into court and
Call me a murderer and liar.
In the cause of human rights
Balance  lives of murdering swine
Against those of serving soldiers,
Of my fellow squaddies and mine.
Whether I go to prison
Or be discharged and set free
Just one thing is certain,
A lawyer will get his fee.
