     “Dark Days”

Everything was dark
today
a world full of
shadows
and black holes
eyes wide open
but nothing to see
as he tries to
make his way
through this desolate
landscape
of nothingness,
he sits on a
disappointed rock
as he scrapes
life’s emptiness
off the bottom
of his shoes
he gets back up
leans into the
constant head wind
that seemingly enjoys
slapping him
in the face
no matter what
direction
he’s plodding in
he takes the back
of his sleeve
and tries to
wipe away
the coal dust like
haze
stinging his eyes
and clinging to
his body
causing a sooty
mixture
of tears and dirt
to run down
his cheeks
as he pulls
his sleeve away
from his face.
No goal or horizon
to put his efforts
towards
just a primal need
to keep in motion
least the muck
of the world
catches up to him
trapping him beneath
it’s undaunting weight,
not showing any
emotion
no trace of care
visible
in his features
he knows nothing
really matters
he just has to
keep moving
till that final bell
tolls
at the end
of the day,
he looks down
at his watch
unable to tell
the time remaining
in the darkness
and filth that
still ruled the day
in his world,
then
off to the right
he sees it
that small speck
of light
an ember of hope
shinning out in
the distance
he suddenly feels
stronger
steps off his road
to nowhere
and on to
tomorrow’s path
which he hopes
will soon be taking
him home,
the light
starts growing
brighter
as the beginnings
of a smile
works its way
across his pain
ridden face
as his eyes
start coming into
focus
on his front door,
I made it
he says
as he unbolts
the lock
somedays
are nothing more
than mere survival
he thinks
enduring its darkness
while marking off
time
till the day
just dies away
from under him
and he makes
it home,
and then
he just prays
that tomorrow
brings him
a bright enough
light
to guide him
through
his dark world
of night
once more
before he
slips off
one of its
edges
never to see
the light
again…
